Described in 1971 by the Danish killifish specialist Jørgen Scheel, Aphyosemion celiae is named after Celia Epie of Mambanda (western Cameroon), the eldest daughter of a rubber plantation manager who helped collect the fish.

It is endemic to the middle Mungo basin in western Cameroon.
It lives in springs, streams, marshes and pools in rainforest and secondary savanna, in very soft, slightly acidic to neutral water between 22 and 26 °C.
Behaviour
Males are fairly lively with each other; preferably keep one male with two females, in a small planted tank with calm companions.
A micro-predator, it prefers small live or frozen prey. It lays its eggs among fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop; incubation takes place in water, as in other non-annual killis.
