Overview
One of the most common rasboras, ideal for a medium-sized community tank. It looks like R. jacobsoni, but lacks dark reticulated scales above its lateral band, whose edges are clearly more irregular than in related species.
- Scientific name
- Rasbora einthovenii (Bleeker, 1851)
- Classification
- Cypriniformes › Danionidae
- IUCN Red List
- Least concern (LC)
Natural habitat
Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It lives mainly in blackwater streams and rivers of ancient peat swamp forests: brown, very soft and acidic water (pH as low as 3), a bottom of leaves and branches, light filtered by the canopy. These habitats are threatened by rubber and oil palm plantations.
Behaviour
Very peaceful, ideal in a well-furnished community tank; undemanding about water, it lives with most popular fish (small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, catfish, loaches), or in a biotope with blackwater species from Malaysia and Borneo. Keep it in a shoal. A micropredator: fine dry food and small live or frozen prey every day.
