Overview
The kribensis, or “krib”, is one of the most common and popular cichlids. The vast majority of fish in the trade are captive-bred: far more adaptable than wild fish, they are also less aggressive when breeding. There is an albino form. The pair spawns in a cave and guards the fry.

Natural habitat
West Africa: eastern Benin, southern Nigeria and western Cameroon
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It lives in calm or slow, shallow and heavily vegetated water; some populations live in brackish water. In the Sombreiro River (Nigeria) it feeds mainly on diatoms, algae, plants and detritus.
Behaviour
Recommended for community tanks, but very territorial when breeding. Rather shy, it should not live with very lively or large species. Good companions: small characins, barbs, Danio, Rasbora, Corydoras, gouramis, Loricariidae, and other West African dwarf cichlids if space allows territories. Keep it as a pair. It accepts almost anything, with live and frozen prey.
