Overview
The largest of the “julies”, striped with dark bands along the body, it is also the least aggressive of the genus. Several geographic forms are available. As with other Julidochromis, large water changes can drive pairs to kill each other.
- Scientific name
- Julidochromis regani Poll, 1942
- Classification
- Cichliformes › Cichlidae
- IUCN Red List
- Least concern (LC)
Natural habitat
Endemic to Lake Tanganyika (Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia)
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
Widespread throughout the lake, it is less tied to rocks than its cousins: it is found mainly over sandy bottoms scattered with rocks, in shallow water, but it always spawns in rocky caves.
Behaviour
Territorial, it lives with other Tanganyikan cichlids (Altolamprologus, Cyprichromis). Except in a very large tank, keep it as a pair, as it is aggressive towards its own kind. Mostly live and frozen prey, dry food less often, and a little plant matter.
