Overview
This checkered “julie” is a cichlid full of character, which swims pressed against the rocks whatever their angle. Several geographic forms are available. As with other Julidochromis, large water changes can drive pairs to kill each other.

Natural habitat
Endemic to Lake Tanganyika (Burundi, DR Congo, Zambia), especially at the northern and southern ends
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It lives along rocky shores, in fairly deep water. A typical rock-dweller, it never ventures far from their shelter and does not swim in open water; it spawns in crevices and caves.
Behaviour
Territorial, it lives with other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size (Altolamprologus, Cyprichromis). Except in a very large tank, keep it as a pair, as adults are very aggressive towards each other. A good share of live and frozen prey, quality dry food and a little plant matter.
