Overview
One of the first Corydoras known, described as early as 1842 by Jenyns from fish collected during Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. The genus name means “helmet skin”, referring to the bony plates that cover its flanks. Like its cousins, it sometimes gulps air at the surface: it can absorb oxygen through its gut.

It lives in rivers, tributaries and still water: pools, ponds and small lakes.
Behaviour
Peaceful, it suits small community tanks, in a group, with tetras and dwarf cichlids. An opportunistic omnivore, it accepts almost anything: good-quality sinking food and live or frozen prey. Coming from subtropical regions, it tolerates cooler water than most Corydoras.
