Natural habitat
Brazil: upper Rio Negro, near São Gabriel da Cachoeira
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It lives in blackwater tributaries and flooded forests of the upper Rio Negro: tea-coloured water with almost no hardness, pH 4 to 6, alongside small characins, pencilfish and Apistogramma.
Behaviour
Peaceful and gregarious, it is kept in a group. An omnivore, it sifts the substrate: sinking dry food and live or frozen prey, without relying on the other fish's leftovers. It needs soft, acidic and very clean water.
