Overview
One of the smallest aquarium fish (1.5 cm). It is recognised by the round dark spot on its caudal peduncle and its complete lateral line; some populations show an orange stripe that leads to confusion with B. brigittae.
- Scientific name
- Boraras urophthalmoides (Kottelat, 1991)
- Classification
- Cypriniformes › Danionidae
- IUCN Red List
- Near threatened (NT)
Natural habitat
Thailand (centre and south); also reported from Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It lives in shallow, clear water with dense submerged vegetation: marshes, floodplains and rice paddies, moving into flooded areas in the rainy season.
Behaviour
Very peaceful but too small and shy for a classic community tank: keep it with other micro fish or small, discreet anabantoids. A micropredator, it feeds on zooplankton: small live or frozen prey and very fine dry food.
