Overview
Its lance-shaped, purplish-red leaves line very straight stems that branch little underwater. This American plant provides a sharp colour accent rather than a loose bush. It is sometimes sold under the incorrect names “perennis” or “peruensis”.

An aquarium plant must never reach the wild: throwing away cuttings or emptying a tank into a stream can be enough to establish it.

Growing in the aquarium
Provide very strong light and enough iron and trace elements. When light is short, the leaves turn green and then drop; even well lit, the bottom of the stems may become bare. To get branches, cut the main shoot. Its colouring does not require deliberately pushing the tank into a nitrate deficiency.
