Overview

Its narrow leaves give stands a fine texture, unlike large-leaved plants. Native to the eastern United States, it turns from green to orange or red tones when conditions suit it. It adds an accent of colour and structure to the midground or background.

Growing in the aquarium

Insufficient lighting can make the base of the stems die back. Under strong light, keep up a regular supply of nutrients, especially iron and trace elements. CO₂ improves vigour without always being essential. Cutting the tips encourages branching; replant the cuttings to fill out or rejuvenate the stand.
