Overview
The young submerged leaves of this American water lily can be orange-red, then turn green with age. The plant forms a small tuberous rhizome and spreads by runners. Some strains flower at night, but their behaviour in the aquarium differs with the origin of the batch.

Growing in the aquarium
Strong light, warmth, a rich substrate and shallow water favour floating leaves. A strain introduced from Bolivia may lose its leaves and roots during several months of rest, while the “Santarem” form seems to grow more continuously. Keep the tuber if the foliage disappears, without promising the same cycle for every strain.
