Natural habitat

Indonesia: Vogelkop (Kepala Burung) Peninsula, in West Papua, on the island of New Guinea

Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes

It usually lives less than a metre deep, in well-oxygenated water with varied currents, near rapids and waterfalls, over rocky bottoms strewn with pebbles, wood and leaves. The water is neutral (pH 7 to 7.5) and warm (22 to 28 °C).

Behaviour

It lives alone or in groups on the bottom and is mostly active at night. Highly territorial, it tolerates no intrusion into its area and can fight its territorial neighbours fiercely.

Care and setup

Offer generous space, separate refuges and decor that marks out several zones. Keeping it with other territorial animals leads to fights; moulting calls for especially safe shelters.

Feeding

It is omnivorous with a leaning towards plants. Include a plant part in a varied diet.

Breeding

The whole cycle takes place in fresh water. Fully formed young leave the mother and look for small shelters.
