Overview
The bamboo shrimp often sits still on a stone or a root, its fans open in the current. Its colours range from beige to brown or green; the stripes along its sides remain a telltale mark. Its legs let it grip firmly in the streams of Southeast Asia.

Natural habitat
Southeast Asia, from Sri Lanka to the Philippines: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia (Sumatra, Borneo)
Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It favours fast, well-oxygenated water in currents and rapids, sometimes near waterfalls, over beds of rock, pebbles, wood or leaves carried by the current. The water is warm (24 to 28 °C) and close to neutral.
Behaviour
Calm and peaceful, it lives in colonies on the bottom and leaves its hiding places mostly at night. It sits in the current to filter plankton with its fans and pays no attention to other animals.

Care and setup
Provide a steady current, good oxygenation and accessible perches, with refuges for moulting. It can live with peaceful fish that do not threaten it.
Feeding
Give very finely crumbled food or small suitable prey, carried by the current to its fans.
Breeding
The adults live in fresh water, but the larvae need salt water to develop.
