Observations (GBIF) and localities Native countries Rivers and lakes
It lives in the fresh waters of East Asia, at very variable temperatures (4 to 28 °C) and a pH of 6 to 8. The red cherry is a red aquarium-bred line of the species, not a separate species.
Behaviour
Peaceful and lively, it lives in colonies near the bottom and is active by day. It explores plants and decor in search of debris and biofilm. Being small, it hides when larger neighbours are around and ignores other species.

Care and setup
Keep it in a group in a planted tank with roots and fine hiding places. Large fish can catch it; the young especially benefit from protective decor.
Feeding
It eats algae, microorganisms and plant debris, topped up if needed with shrimp food.
Breeding
The whole cycle can take place in fresh water. The young hatch fully formed and quickly explore the surfaces of the tank.
